Statement:
“ Limited Edition”

The term “Limited Edition” was originally used by printmakers to indicate that there were only a few prints in an “edition” and they numbered them so that the collector would know how many were printed, presumably because fewer copies meant each would be more valuable. In printmaking, the “original” is the print, The printmaking process is done by hand so each print contains slight variations which make it unique. However, technology in the printing industry allows for the reproduction of original paintings to produce a number of exact copies which are numbered and sold as limited editions. The term “limited edition” has been applied to everything from automobiles to breakfast cereal, and I believe that it has become overused and meaningless and no longer has any value to printmakers.
When confronted by photography and a changing technology which was able to capture an image more readily than their brushes, artists turned to using their talents to create an imagery that could not be duplicated by photography. As a printmaker I propose to do the same, so rather than creating an edition of “identical” prints which machines can do with greater accuracy I am exploring the results of using my woodblock printing plates in different ways to produce a variety of images from a single set of blocks, or a recombination of the plates to create a new image from them. I do print a number of images from any given set of blocks, but in the modern interpretation of “limited edition” it would be impossible for me to produce anything but a “limited edition” since most of my plates would wear out before I could print even 2000 prints and I have seen numbered editions of more than 10 times that number. I therefore rarely number them. In most cases where I have numbered an edition, I never printed the full edition anyway. I am producing prints using woodblocks and other printmaking techniques which may be one unique print, several similar ones or variations of the same plates. Each one is an original like the prints of all true printmakers.
